The internet has taken over our lifestyle making it impossible not to stay connected. Whether you’re a business traveler or just a regular Joe / Jane enjoying a vacation, the internet is one technology you simply cannot do without. Most gadgets today allow you to surf the net regardless of your location. Name it: shopping, real-time online gaming and even checking-in your upcoming flight!
Moving from one place to another can sometimes be a challenge because not all places are wired up. However, there are ways to get around this problem. Here are tips to help you stay online when you travel.
1. Surf the net using your mobile phone ( Never send a deposit for a mobile phone and never buy outside of the UAE)
But before you indulge, check with your service provider about data charges overseas. International roaming coupled with data charges can rack up thousands in phone bills.
2. Use internet cafes
You can opt for internet cafes to surf online. Rates are usually $2-$7 per hour depending on the country you are in. Just a word of caution, do not open your bank account or personal accounts in public cafes because sinister ID thieves abound online.
3. Hotel WiFi
Most hotels offer free WiFi as part of your stay. Inquire with the concierge if they offer these services.
4. Prepaid internet cards
Some countries sell prepaid internet cards in various denominations. You may check out the local community as to where you can purchase the cards. This is a good option if your hotel doesn’t offer free internet services.
5. Mobile USB modem
There are prepaid USB modem drivers available overseas. Most of these internet paraphernalia use 3G or EDGE technology. Ask the locals, your friends or co-workers abroad about this option.
Being connected anywhere in the world is possible. There are many options available now unlike 10 years ago. All you need is to do some research and decide as to which option will suit your needs.
