John is interested in all aspects of painting, including portraits and figure studies.
He was trained as an oil painter, but finds gouache an interesting alternative as it allows oil and watercolour techniques to be applied within the same work.
Painterly qualities such as the calligraphy of brush and pen are of prime importance, but equally, so is the recording of actual experiences in the landscape - a sense of light aids him in this quest.
John has exhibited widely and has won several prestigious prizes, including the Jakar International Prize and the Royle Publications Prize.
