So on it goes and the body count goes up and the respective propagandas become even more jaw-droppingly entrenched. How fatally Palestinian that the leadership sit safe and warm in neighbouring Arab capitals as oblivious to the horrific realities as the Israeli army. It is weird that this coincides with a time when I am getting more exposure to Palestinian artists than I have for several years. It is amazing to see the subtle and often ingenious ways in which each interprets their personal and national histories. It is also fascinating to see CVs that reflect recent history like exhibitions in the Nobel Peace Centre, even joint exhibitions with Israeli artists. History that is no more than 10 years old yet is unthinkable now. It made me wonder where the Israeli artists are now too but given that all the Israeli sites are blocked I?m not going to find out from here! I was at a meeting a few days ago in which somebody asked how can art resolve conflict? It can't! It can communicate the human dimensions of a given situation. It can provide alternative ways of looking at it thus creating the possibility of a different kind of dialogue. What is apparent from some of those CVs is that art can't do anything except maintain its own sanity and wait for the politics to catch up. Comments
