It's
the point of the year where people stay for summer. Whilst other people go, some people get the never ending heat
and some people just hibernate in Dubai.
The beaches thin out and the air conditioned venues
get busier. Andi M from Dubai Lime catch up with Mr Mr to find out what he is doing for the summer
and what's next for him after summer.
Tell us something about you and what you do in Dubai?
My name is Mike. Some
know me as Mr Mr - some as that guy on the radio from 360º who speaks on behalf
of audio tonic! I tend to deal with music quite a bit, but also dabble in
promotion, creative stuff like writing and tag lines, music production, radio
adverts and general NewDawn business related stuff. I love it!
What is Alpha all about and how are you
connected?
'Alpha' is all about very very good music and very very nice people. It's a new
clubbing concept with the best sound system in Dubai- we don't claim to be the
loudest, just the most 'organic' - I like to call it. I look after Thursday
nights, the Cogntio and 'In'Cognito events. Upfront House Music all night long-
nothing hard, nothing commercial, just solid educational House Music!
Let’s talk about the next 3 months, what’s going on?
I'll be busy with 'alpha' and my radio shows. Now, 360º is closed for the Summer
season I also have to prepare for 3 hours of air time on Fridays. It's nice
though, as I get a chance to play mixes from all the local guys and
International. I'll be heading over to Ibiza for a week or so in September but
nothing as heavy as last year. I've said it before but I wasn't at all
impressed with the music there last season, very commercial and crowd
pleasing - the opposite of what I believe in.
Have you heard about the new laws down in Abu Dhabi that should be kicking
in about August time?
Nope, can you let me in on the secret?! Maybe that clubs will stay open till
5am? In fact I wouldn't want that, it's nice to finish at 3am, pack up your
tunes, go home and have a cup of PG Tips before the sun rises.
Any sneaky info on what is happening after Ramadam?
Just lots and lots and lots more innovative forward thinking DJ's and fantastic
music for Audio tonic at 360º and my 'alpha' nights. I've heard there are new
venues opening up - talking over 3K capacity venues, so should be
interesting.
How is the radio show going?
Very good. I just love having the freedom to play what I want to play, and kick
off the Radio 1 weekend. My show is not track listed- I choose everything. I do
however keep open minded and throw in more 'accessible' tunes for the 'DXB Top
8 @ 8', but still forward thinking.
What is your top tune for 2008?
It's got to be 'This That & The Other' from Matt Rowan, the Roger Martinex
Mix. It's not a course knowledge track, but you'll be hearing it lots on my
shows and in the coming months.
Have you heard the Ting Tings? Can you get them out doing a DJ set?
Hmmmm, hang on, let me hit up Google! -:)
Failing that any chance of Kissy Sell Out?
Oh yes, indeed! What a producer, very talented and heard he rocks the socks of
dance floors. Probably best for the See You Next Tuesday nights at 'alpha', but
maybe an 'In'Cognito, watch this space!
Where can we catch you playing?
'alpha' on Thursdays, and also for a very special event on Saturday the 5th
July called 'The Passionately Pink Party'. It's also being held at 'alpha' to
raise the awareness of cancer in the UAE, a very good cause indeed. Other than
that, Radio 1 on Thursday nights from 8pm and Fridays from 7pm. And of course
360º after Ramadan.
Thanks kindly for your time, keep busting the tunes!
It's my pleasure, thank you for liming me up!
