Best Album Ever and Why? 2007/05/15 14:42
Ok whats the best 5 albums ever who was it by and why. Here are my top 5

Beatles Revolver - Why - Its just the best, I would have put Rubber Soul second but I didnt want to be Beatles Centric!

Radiohead and the Bends - Simply a great album I listened to it for weeks when it came out and its still on my most played list on my Ipod today

Porgy and Bess - A soundtrack from an American Folk Opera? daring and visionary artistic choice at the time and still the best Jazz albulm to crash out to when you are on the sofa after a heavy night on the twon

Velvet Underground and Nico - no explanation needed

The Joshua Tree - if you dont like this album you dont heave ears

Thats my 5 whats yours?

I'm not sure if I have any audience to talk about my favorite thing in my life and thats music. But what make music different is music genre.

I believe that music is not some type of matched lyrics & bunch of tones. Music transfer energy to listeners.

Any way I won't take to much of your time, and I don't think here is a good place to talk about METAL.

These days I'm more into Celtic:
1- Loreena McKennitt - A Winter Garden, Elemental
2- Maire Brennan - Whisper To The Wild Water

Things I've always loved:
1- Scorpions - Gold Ballads
2- Scorpions & Berliner Philharmoniker - Moment of Glory
3- The Cranberries - No Need To Argue
4- Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze Of Glory
5- Brian Adams - MTV Unplugged

Some of them are not albums, I've rarely found an album to like all the songs.

Re:Best Album Ever and Why? 2007/05/29 14:04
In no particular order:

A night at the opera: The perfect Queen album.

Automatic for the PPL: The perfect REM album.

The Unforgettable Fire by u2: the first time the band recruited the genius of brian eno and daniel lanois. Bono's best vocals. the soundscapes on this album r captivating.

Madman across the water by elton john: the perfect elton john album is captain fantastic, but my fav is madman. great string arrangements, session players at their best.

Human conditions by richard aschroft: his 2nd solo album ... noone really noticed it. im not sure why i even bought it in the first place. it was during uni, a lonely and bleak period of time
and i was happy to find a friend in mr.ashcroft. our friendship has somewhat suffered from his horrendous follow-up album.

Re:Best Album Ever and Why? 2007/05/29 14:28
the bends and ok computer are 2 great albums.
ive never listened to a beatles album.
velvet underground and nico- understood.
porgy and bess? an american folk opera, with a jazz sdtrk? awesome! i should look into it.
the joshua tree has some of my fav u2 songs, but i feel the unforgettable fire is far better. have u ever noticed how joshua picks up exactly where the unforgettable ends? MLK morphs into Where the streets have no name. exit, running to stand still, mothers of the disappeared r some of my fav tracks on joshua.

Ahhh the eternal question! You do realise that its an utterly impossible question to answer but here goes (in no partcular order):

  • The Beatles, Revolver - Simply wanktastic.

  • Oasis, Definitely Maybe - Oasis got me into music...what a debut!

  • Radiohead, The Bends - A masterpiece alongside OK Computer.

  • Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon

  • Stone Roses, The Stone Roses

  • I could go on, I really could, but perhaps I'll save it for another topic

The Beatles - Sgt Pepper - defined a generation. Still sounds fresh.

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power - inspirational guitar riffs, sparsely arranged and expertly showing how a Les Paul and Vox AC30 is all that you need.

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead - Marr's layered guitars and mandolin work on "The Boy With a Thorn in His Side" is superb.

Nirvana - Nevermind - Cobain..an average player but songs that spoke to millions. They still do.

Jeff Buckley - Grace - the best voice I have heard.

Talking about Cobain..did you ever see his T Shirt that he wore in every single photo shoot with "HI How Are you?" on it. I will give 200 dhms worth of Drinks be it Juice or anything else to anyone who can tell me where the inspiration came for that T Shirt - "They are going to send me to the Loony Bin! - Covered the Velvet underground who had been out looking for him all night b4 they wrote Sunday Morning -

    Give it three posts

Jeff Buckley - Agree good voice but best album ever? Are you sure?

    Depends how you define 'best'.

I chose to choose the 5 albums that I like best. If you measure best in terms of commercial success then the list might look something like this.

    Michael Jackson - Thriller
    The Eagles - Greatest Hits
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    AC/DC - Back in Black
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

Cobain wore that T shirt in honour of a guy called Daniel Johnston who he thought was super cool. (I cheated and looked that up on the net..)

Sweet answer! Check out Daniel Johnson - I dont know if he was a twisted genious or just a nutter with a guitar - have to say I am leaning towards twisted genius at the moment. His DVD Biography / docu is out now.

I thought I already posted this but here goes attempt number 2

    1. Beatles - The White Album. Lennon's tracks on this album make me put down the pen for a few days each time.
    2. Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold as Love. To any guitar player this one is self explanitory.
    3. John Coltrane - Bluetrane. If you like jazz at all you'll be sold in the first 30 seconds of the opening track.
    4. Neutral Milk Hotel - In an Aeroplane Over the Sea. Cryptic yet beautiful melodies, borderline insane lyrics, and interesting instrumentation. A must for all singer songwriters.
    5. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Just download it.

    ok, here goes:

    Miles Davis - Blue.
Muddy Waters - The Best Of. (you haven't heard the blues till you've heard this album)
Radiohead - The Bends (I agree, its a repeat player)
Ani Difranco - Untouchable Face (this has been on my car CD player for over 6 yrs, its a righteous girl thing)
    Tom Waits - Blue Valentine

These may not make the "Best Album Ever" list, but are still way underrated in my opinion:
    1. Sarah Mclachlan - Tumbling Towards Ecstacy
    2. Ani Difranco - Not a Pretty Face
    3. Blues Traveller - Four
    4. Feist
    5. Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack (can we include soundtracks? This one is really really good)

I think Quincy Jones would defo have to win best produced album ever with Thriller, but I don't think it was the best album ever.

Right, here we go with my subjective personal list:

Primal Scream - Screamadelica (quite simply the album of the 90's and it came out in 91)

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 87 - 92 (the mans a genius - its like pressing a pause button on your life when you are "relaxing")

Zero 7 - Simple things (got me through my dissertation that one)

    4 Hero - Two Pages

    Early stuff by The Band.

    Honourable mentions:

Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales (I can't believe that I've put this one on the list but when I think back to how long it was in my cd player for I'm not surprised - in fact I will leave it as an but it doesn;t count okay.)

Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA
