Dubai has earned its right to be considered one of, if not the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Home to numerous cultural and modern attractions and largely renowned for its marvelous shopping venues, Dubai has also grown to become the hub of many international sporting events such as football and golf. Nevertheless, this vibrant and colorful city is home to a sport that is traditionally and definitely Dubai…the Dubai Traditional Rowing Race. Over the years, this race has attracted visitors from all over the world to witness and be a part of this event.
Although the traditional boats, known as dhows, are not quite as long as they were in the past, they create a dramatic sight as their crammed-in crews labor at their oars, thrusting their boats through calm inshore waters under the electrified gaze of spectators.
Dhow owners take part in this exhilarating annual race carrying several athletes from around the United Arab Emirates, competing against each other to reach the finish line along the Abu Dhabi Corniche. The Traditional Rowing Race is the biggest 2-day sporting event and one of the most exciting December events in Dubai this year.
The race, which evokes traditions and customs of an historical era, is held over a 55-nautical-mile (102 km) course. On 31st of December till New Year’s Day, January 1, 2011, the race will again attract thousands of local and world-wide rowers, including spectators who will line up the beaches of Abu Dhabi Corniche and nearby locations to watch several racing events over the two day period.
December weather in Dubai is marvelous, and spectators are sure to experience everything from dazzling pristine waters, to spectacular sunshine and blue skies. In addition to the races, the event features displays by boat builders, a rowing and fitness expo, other vendors, and, of course, food. Finally, in concord with the tradional nature of the race, it will be followed by the national anthem, folk dances and songs performed by local heritage troupes.
