apple.jpgApple is now negotiating to expand its ringtone selection on the iTunes Store, according to information shared by Saul Hansell of the New York Times.  The expansion requires major label licensing, a potentially sticky process given the heavy baggage between the groups.

Apple currently offers ringtones for 99-cents, on top on an initial track purchase. But the discussions are not limited to just ringtones, according to executives.  Hansell pointed to discussions involving other formats like the ringback tone, though delivery of the unique, carrier-controlled snippet could be tricky.

Over-the-air (OTA) downloads are also reportedly on the table, though labels are pushing for greater percentages on the premium format.  An 3G-compatible iPhone - an expected upgrade - makes OTA delivery more feasible.
