Indian classical maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma performs in Dubai on Saturday as part of the annual Dubai Summer Surprises festival.
The event, on Saturday June 19, is being held at the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre – Ductac, Mall of Emirates, with tickets priced from Dh100. He will be accompanied by Ram Kumar Mishra on the tabla.
Sharma is one of the biggest names in Indian classical music and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan.
“Hosting a musician of the calibre of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma in Dubai during DSS 2010 is part of our endeavour to reach out to multi-cultural audiences and enhance the entertainment experience for various visitor segments. Musicals and concerts are a core element of DSS entertainment and Swaralaya is one of many events that visitors and residents will be able to enjoy this summer,” a spokesperson of the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, which organises the DSS, said in a statement.
The santoor is a classical Indian stringed instrument that Sharma has almost single-handedly popularised, modifying it to make it more suitable for his classical technique and introducing a new chromatic arrangement of notes and increased the range to cover full three octaves.
Sharma also improvised a new technique of playing with which he could sustain notes and maintain sound continuity.
