Neapolitan Opera Stars set to perform in Italian Opera Gala at DUCTAC


DUCTAC has a treat in store for opera fans on 20th January as two acclaimed International Opera stars perform at the Centrepoint Theatre.  Italian Opera Gala will feature established International Tenor, Francesco Malapena, who will be arriving in Dubai from his native Naples especially for this show, fresh from his recent acclaimed performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall.  Joining him will be fellow Neapolitan, Soprano Monica De Rosa McKay, who studied with the maestro Luciano Pavarotti and currently resides in Dubai. They will be accompanied on the piano by the well known performer and composer David Lesser.

The Italian Opera Gala is a wonderful opportunity to hear a wide selection of music from the great Italian operatic masterpieces – music of great beauty, drama and romance.  The Arias, songs and duets performed will include pieces from the operas of Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini, Verdi, Catalini, Leoncavallo and Tosti.

monica-1Monica De Rosa McKay

Monica is an Italian lyric soprano who graduated "cum laude" at the G.B. Martini Conservatory of Bologna, Italy under the guidance of Maestro Leone Magiera. She continued studying with Maestro Luciano Pavarotti and Maestro Carlo Bergonzi and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena, Italy. She has obtained notable success and critical acclaim performing in concerts and giving recitals in various Italian cities. Since 1993 she has travelled extensively throughout the word living and performing in many countries including France, England, Mexico, Venezuela, USA and Italy. She currently resides in Dubai, UAE.

 

Francesco Malapena

Francesco is a "Neapolitan Tenor". He was already on the stage when he was five years old as a "little singer and actor" in different companies. He studied violin and mandolin at the Conservatoire "San Pietro a Majella" in Naples. He has been awarded the "Premio E. Caruso" in 2004, a prestigious prize that gave him the opportunity of performing at the Metropolitan Theatre in New York, at Saint Patrick's Cathedral and in several theatres in Broadway.
He played the leading role of Rodolfo in "La Bohème" in Stuttgart and the role of Alfredo in "La Traviata" staged at the Teatro Dante Alighieri in Ravenna for the Ravenna Festival, directed by Mrs. Cristina Mazzavillani Muti. He recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall, in London.

 

David Lesser

David studied the piano at the Royal College of Music in London and then the music composition at the University of Huddersfield. He was Senior Teaching Fellow in Music and Open Studies Certificate coordinator at the University of Warwick (1993-2007). His music has been widely performed in Britain and Europe by Ensemble Aleph, Accroche Note, Linda Hirst, Ian Pace and others. As a performer he specializes in the music of the Twentieth century, vocal repertoire, and has given a number of world and British premieres. He is active as a composer, performer, lecturer and teacher.

About DUCTAC

Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre is the first modern, non profit, cross-community multi-art form creative centre in the Gulf. The Centre was officially opened on 1 November 2006 by Honorary Patron HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

 

Located on Level 2 of Mall of the Emirates, the Centre occupies around 80,000 square feet and includes a 543-seat theatre, 200-seat studio theatre, art gallery, dance studios, rehearsal rooms, artists’ studios, classrooms, mosaic and pottery workshops, and food and beverage facilities. Also on site is the Centre For Musical Arts, The Old Library and Arts Materials Shop.

 

The Centre is host to some 100 classes a week, local, national and international shows, artists, productions and performances. Facilities are available for hire performances, seminars, workshops and presentations.

 

Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre does not receive any funding. It relies on the generous support of sponsors and patrons and on income generated through the hire of its facilities. The Centre is currently fundraising to support its artistic programme, educational and outreach work.
