Buying fragrances can be confusing and quite overwhelming. From eau de parfum to eau de toilette to eau de cologne to parfum to perfume! They are all different in respect of aromatic compound composition.
Shopping for a new fragrance will be easier if you know how to tell the difference between perfume or parfum or a cologne from an eau fraiche.
For women's fragrances, here are the types of perfumes according to strength:
- Perfume
The richest and longest-lasting with 20-40% aromatic compounds. Perfume is the most expensive of all.
- Parfum
This contains between 10-30% aromatic compounds, making it the second strongest fragrance. Parfum literally means watered perfume. It is not as strong as perfume and also, not as expensive.
- Eau de Toilette
A perfume solution with a 3-8% aromatic compound in an oil and water base. Lighter than the eau de parfum and perfect for an everyday scent.
- Eau de Fraiche
This has the lowest concentration with 1-3% essential oils and the least expensive. The most diluted fragrance of all, just perfect as a touch up scent.
Here are the men’s fragrances according to potency:
- Eau de Toilette
This perfume solution with a 3-8% aromatic compound in an oil and water base. More subtle and can last up to 2-4 hours.
- Cologne/Eau de Cologne
This has a typical concentration of about 2-5% aromatic compounds. Longevity varies depending on the brand. Some can last up to 12 hours.
- After Shave
The weakest with a 1-5% percent fragrance. Generally, men use after shave to close up the pores after shaving but it's also used a base fragrance for other colognes.
Light perfumes are best for daytime while the heavy concentrations are fitting to evening affairs. Longevity depends on the perfume’s composition or in the perfumery’s parlance, perfume accords. So, it’s also nose-worthy to check out the ingredients before you make the purchase.
